Grant for Research and Development

Grant for Research and Development is the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) initiative that provides grants to help individuals and small and medium-sized businesses to research and develop technologically innovative products and processes.

The help described here is available in England. (Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have their own initiatives).

This product replaces the Smart scheme
which formally closed to applications on 31 August 2003.

The Case Studies listed below are examples of previous Micro, Feasibility and Development projects which were supported under the Smart scheme. These should give you an idea of the type of projects the grant for research and development can support. Please note that Feasibility Studies are now called Research Projects
